About this proceedings

It gives me great pleasure to write the Foreword to the Proceedings of the International Conference and Doctoral Colloquium on Management, Entrepreneurship, and Rural Finance (ICMERF-DC 2026), organised by the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The conference, with the theme “Innovations in Management, Entrepreneurship and Rural Finance for Sustainable Development in Emerging Economies,” is both timely and relevant. It speaks directly to the need for fresh ideas, practical solutions, and evidence-based interventions in addressing the development challenges confronting Nigeria, Africa, and other emerging economies. The contemporary business and development environment is increasingly shaped by technological advancement, financial innovation, entrepreneurial dynamism, institutional reform, and the growing demand for sustainable economic transformation. Within this context, management scholarship, entrepreneurship research, and rural finance studies provide an important intellectual foundation for understanding how organisations, enterprises, communities, policymakers, and institutions can respond to uncertainty, create value, promote inclusion, and contribute to sustainable development. These proceedings are therefore more than a collection of academic papers. They represent a valuable scholarly resource that brings together diverse perspectives from academics, researchers, doctoral students, practitioners, and policy-oriented thinkers. The papers contained in this volume address critical issues in digital transformation, business innovation, agricultural finance, microfinance, rural credit systems, human resource management, corporate governance, SME development, risk management, women and youth entrepreneurship, sustainable operations, and technology-driven entrepreneurship. A particularly commendable feature of ICMERF-DC 2026 is the integration of a doctoral colloquium into the conference structure. This provides a useful platform for mentoring emerging scholars, improving doctoral research quality, and encouraging meaningful academic engagement between experienced researchers and postgraduate students. Such engagement is essential for building the next generation of scholars who will contribute to knowledge, policy, and practice. I wish to commend the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, for hosting this important academic event. The Department has continued to demonstrate commitment to scholarship, research development, professional engagement, and the advancement of management education. I also acknowledge the efforts of the Conference Organising Committee, reviewers, editors, lead paper presenters, keynote speakers, paper contributors, and all participants whose commitment made these proceedings possible. The theme of the conference is particularly appropriate because sustainable development in emerging economies cannot be achieved through conventional thinking alone. It requires innovation in management practices, entrepreneurship support systems, rural financing models, institutional frameworks, and policy implementation. It also requires collaboration among universities, government institutions, private sector actors, development partners, and local communities. I am confident that this volume will serve as a useful reference for academics, students, researchers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, development practitioners, and all stakeholders interested in management, entrepreneurship, rural finance, and sustainable development. It is my hope that the ideas presented here will stimulate further research, inform policy decisions, improve practice, and inspire stronger collaboration across disciplines and sectors. I warmly congratulate the Department of Business Administration, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and all contributors to these proceedings. I encourage readers to engage critically with the papers and to draw from them insights that can advance scholarship and support sustainable development in emerging economies.
